4WD  Day Tour

Outback History, Aboriginal History, Mountain Railway Tunnels and Rainforest

Every Friday and Every Third Sunday of the Month

Relive some of the pioneer days, when a trip through the notorious Thornton's Gap on Hervey's Range took a full day. Take morning tea at the old Eureka Hotel, built in 1865, the oldest building in North Queensland. The hotel, now The Hervey's Range Heritage Tea rooms is listed on the National Trust, and is the one of only a few slab huts still in existence.

The Aboriginal history of the Townsville region is not well known, but we help you understand the changes aboriginal people have seen both through geological time, and since the coming of the white man. The amazing story of shipwreck survivor James Morril, who lived with local aboriginal people for 17 years, before the coming of the white man, comes to life on this tour. Learn of the aboriginal people's tearful request, and his heartfelt concern that they be left just some land. Learn of the changing nature of aboriginal/white interactions, with the coming of the pastoralists.

Tour the amazing tunnels of the Greenvale rail corridor and witness the fantastic views of the coast from atop Hervey's Range.  Travel through miles of bush roads before lunching in the cool climate of the Hidden Valley Cabins. Then experience the rainforest of Paluma range as we wind our way back down to the coast.
We take you to places very few people have been.
Experience the best four-wheel driving day trip out of Townsville.

Apart from some interesting four-wheel driving, this trail has history galore. Witness evidence of climate change over eons, experience aboriginal history.  Drive down the old Thorntons Gap Bullocky Trail, Take a short walk to the site of a 19th century hotel (1865) . Discover forgotten grave sites dating from the 1870's. See amazing feats of engineering from the 1920's and 1970's. Find abandoned mines and relive some fascinating history of the US Army in Australia during World War II.

Not just a four-wheel driving tour, but a guided journey through the ancient and modern history of Thuringowa and North Queensland.
